I found the issue, here it is for future reference if anyone else discovers this. This is the error in the log "Error message: 3dsmax adapter error : Autodesk 3dsMax 16.0 reported error: Could not load irradiance map." So I don't understand what is so special about the IR files, that backburner can't see them? I don't typically have any issues accessing textures, models, files over my network, all the nodes communicate with a NAS where all the files are stored. I just need to sort out this reoccurring errors. With the few frames I have managed to render the results look good, the workflow is straight forward and the render times are acceptable. It's very erratic, works on some render nodes some of the time, and never on some others. I'm starting a new project with lots of moving objects and I want to use the animation Pre-calc workflow, the trouble is, back burner is really driving me nuts with errors to do with not loading the individual irradiance maps. Before I had been whacking up the settings and rendering frame by frame they have been acceptable, but a little noisy and flickery. I've been using V-Ray now for about 12 years, and just recently I have been producing more animations with moving objects. Hey I wonder if someone can help me, as I'm pulling my hair out!!!
